Who is fondue suited to?

Fondue suits families, groups of friends and couples. Children like the fun side, but watch the heat and safety around the pot. Among friends, it is the excuse for a long evening after skiing.

Think about dietary needs (lactose intolerance, allergies): ask the restaurant to adapt or plan an alternative at home.

Before inviting everyone round the pot, check four points:

1. Equipment: not all accommodation has a fondue set. Ask the host.

2. Number of guests: one pot for eight people soon gets complicated.

3. Ventilation and safety: air the room and be careful with the burner, especially around children.

4. Planning: cheeses, bread and equipment are prepared before the evening itself.

Essential points to check before you start

Atmosphere matters as much as the recipe: soft lighting, music, good company. Improvisation is rarely a fondue’s best friend: preparing is already enjoying.

Fondue is within everyone’s reach, provided you organise yourself a little. To discover other classics, see our article on classic Savoyard dishes.

How to choose cheeses and accompaniments?

Savoyard tradition rests on a blend of the region’s cheeses, for example Beaufort, Comté, Abondance or Emmental. Proportions vary with taste; people often allow about 200 g of cheese per person. A cheesemonger can advise on the blend and prepare it.

For bread, choose a country loaf with a firm crumb, bought the day before: too fresh and it falls apart. Add steamed potatoes, crunchy vegetables, gherkins and cold meats. A dry white Savoie wine goes into the recipe and accompanies the meal.

Avoid poor-quality industrial blends and pre-packed bread, which betray the taste of the fondue.

You need a pot, a burner and long forks. Three solutions:

Option 1: ask your host for the fondue set before booking or on arrival.

Option 2: enquire at the resort’s shops about hiring one; book in school holidays.

Option 3: if you plan several fondues, buying may be worthwhile.

On safety, favour a burner suited to enclosed spaces and follow the accommodation’s rules.

Where to find or rent equipment?

A good selection gives your fondue a real local signature: ask the shopkeepers for advice. Our article on raclette in Les 2 Alpes follows the same logic for the other great cheese dish.

For equipment, planning ahead is key: arrange it as soon as you arrive or when booking the accommodation. For general information, see the official Les 2 Alpes website.

The key steps for a successful fondue

Rub the inside of the pot with a garlic clove. Add the grated cheeses then the dry white wine, over low heat, stirring without hurrying (in figures of eight rather than circles). Watch the heat: too strong and the mix may split; too gentle and it stalls.

If the texture is too thick, add a little white wine. A little starch diluted in the wine can help if you fear lumps.

Even regulars know the mix that splits or the bread that falls to the bottom. Plan ahead: ask the cheesemonger about the cheese-to-wine ratio, and pick a firm enough bread.

In a rental, test electric pots cold and read the instructions. Keep a small jug of hot water to loosen the fondue if it overheats.

Common problems: how to avoid them?

Spread the guests around the table, ideally no more than six per pot. Have snacks ready for the aperitif during preparation. Children can help cut the bread. Adjust the quantity of cheese to appetite after a day’s skiing.

Set the mood: soft lighting, music, a board game. Never leave the fondue waiting on the heat and keep control of the temperature. To finish, a light dessert or a digestive walk extends the evening.

Booking or organising on the spot

In school holidays and at weekends, book your restaurant several days ahead, and aim for an early sitting to enjoy the atmosphere without the crowd. Our article on must-try restaurants presents a few tables in the resort centre.

For a fondue at home, ask directly in shops about equipment availability: the offer varies from shop to shop.

In bad weather, favour a meal indoors. Compare the budget of a home fondue (cheeses, bread, accompaniments) with restaurant menus, whose prices vary by establishment. Check the Les 2 Alpes weather page to choose dinner time.

Last points to watch

Do your shopping outside the weekend peaks, preferably in the early afternoon, and ask shopkeepers for advice on cheese and wine pairings. In winter, some shops close earlier: a call the day before avoids hassle.

Last checks: comfortable clothes, tablecloths and tea towels, return times for hired equipment, a plan B in case of closure. For a question before your stay, you can contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to the most common questions about our products. Julia ensures transparency, efficiency, and detailed information in everything we do.

Where do I buy cheese for a fondue?
From the resort’s cheesemongers, markets and grocers. Ask for a blend suited to fondue: beaufort, comté, emmental, depending on taste.
Can I hire a fondue set?
Sometimes: ask your host, then enquire at the resort’s shops, booking in high season.
What accompaniments should I plan?
Diced country bread, steamed potatoes, gherkins, cold meats and green salad. Vary with seasonal vegetables.
How do I avoid the classic problems?
Grate the cheese ahead, heat gently, add the wine gradually and stir constantly. Too fierce a heat makes the fondue stick.
Do I need to book a restaurant?
Yes, especially in school holidays and at weekends. A fondue at home is a good alternative, with more freedom on timing.
